‘The White Lake has moved a long way fromToujours Provence and become the story of a personal and political struggle, a kind of alternative history of the Polish transformation. It might even be the perfect book for anyone feeling the need to catch up on what exactly happened after 1989. There is just enough background history for outsiders to understand the motivations of the characters, but not so much as to become incomprehensible.’

We are delighted to announce that David Rose is our author of the month. David has written extensively on intelligence and covert action by agencies all over the world for more than twenty years. He’s been a contributing editor with Vanity Fair since 2002, and on staff at the Guardian, Observer and BBC. He currently writes investigative articles for the Mail on Sunday.
We recently published David’s title Taking Morgan, which is a gripping novel of political intrigue and suspense. It is also the deeply affecting story of a modern couple struggling in their marriage, suddenly at risk of losing each other forever.
Taking Morgan has received the following praise:
‘Written by an acclaimed investigative journalist, using all his hard-won experience in the Middle East, this debut is based on a string of real events that bring it a refreshing authenticity. You can almost taste the dust of the streets, smell the explosions, and feel the fear that grips his female protagonist Morgan Cooper… The fate of Morgan and what it must be like to lose your liberty for months gives the story a fearsome grip that lasts to the final page’ —Daily Mail
‘A compelling thriller and an invaluable guide to the most intractable conflict on earth’ —Mail on Sunday
‘Among the novel’s strengths are the author’s in-depth knowledge of the region and its political complexities. Both an espionage yarn and the story of a marriage, it contains all the twists and double-crosses you could wish for, yet mercifully lacks the wham-bam formulaic clunkiness of more seasoned writers of spy fiction’ —Sunday Times
‘Rose shuttles frantically but effectively between different worlds, ratcheting up the tension’ —Guardian
‘A smartly paced political thriller’ —Observer
‘The unravelling of Morgan’s plight, and Adam’s response to it, takes many interesting twists and turns, made the more convincing by Rose’s obvious mastery of his subject‘ —The Times
Other news from David:
At the end of March, David spoke in a panel discussion on the future of investigative journalism at the Oxford Literary Festival.
David Rose also recently attempted to clear a death row prisoner convicted of murder. He argued that the prisoner’s feet were much bigger than the culprit’s, and that the prisoner was, therefore, innocent. To read the full story by David Rose go here.
‘Born in Siberia illuminates a time and place in history that I personally didn’t know about; and Astafieva comes across as a bright, charismatic personality who is a pleasure to meet through the pages of her book.’

Addicted to art, Brian Sewell has been the art critic of the London Evening Standard since 1984 – the sad end of a once promising career, the Orwell, Hawthornden and other prizes scant consolation to a man who once enjoyed life as a scholar gypsy.

‘The Passenger is not only perfectly paced, it is filled with gorgeous observations and home truths written by an author with a perceptive eye.
This eloquent tale about an unlikely friendship, about opening ourselves up to new experiences and not being afraid to share our stories with strangers, is both heart-warming and heart-breaking.
But its real strength lies in the way it so wisely and astutely reveals how we can never leave the places that shaped us, nor forget those who have played such important roles in our lives. Who knew a taxi journey could be so enlightening?’
