The Last Word Review reviews Invisible Threads by Lucy Beresford

9780704373853‘Sometimes a book will arrive that will leave an indelible mark on you and when I was asked if I would like to review Invisible Threads by Lucy Beresford I had no real idea that this would be THAT book.

This is a deeply moving account of a woman grieving after loss of her husband, who she understood was killed Afghanistan. I found that I was hooked on the story very quickly. We get to know Sara very well and soon she realised that the actual truth about how her husband Mike actually died and more importantly where he died suddenly the book takes on a whole new dimension’

The Independent gives a fantastic review of Hotel Arcadia by Sunny Singh

9780704373792‘Singh’s novel is not only a page-turning thriller. It is far more than that. We never meet the terrorists: they are nearly always elsewhere. Singh’s characters inhabit an arena of trauma, where little happens but the play of light and shadow on a screen and in the soul’

Kate Saunders reviews Not Far from Dreamland by Val Hennessy for Saga Magazine

9780704373877

‘I’m delighted to report that Val Hennessy, whose merciless journalism is the stuff of legend, has not mellowed with age. Ronald Tonks, hero of this highly amusing novel, lives in a shaky bungalow at Saltmarsh on the Kent coast. He once ran the local second-hand bookshop. His wife has left him, his dog’s going bald, he’s battling with wonky teeth and online dating – and his horoscope says his life’s about to change dramatically. Tonks is great company as he has no intention of growing old in any conventional way – and the ending is wonderfully feel-good’

The Bookbag gives a fantastic review of Low Life: The Spectator Columns by Jeremy Clarke

Low-Life_PB_low

‘I found myself falling into the ‘just another chapter’ trap (they’re all just two and a half pages long, so it’s a very easy trap to fall into) and on a couple of nights I read into the early hours of the morning. There’s a story arc as you read through the pieces and a strong temptation to find out what happens next. It’s helped of course by the fact that the writing is exquisite – Clarke is a poet and he understands the value of words – and there’s an odd frisson as you read this beautiful prose describing bad behaviour’

Our Chairman Naim Attallah on Sleeping with Dogs and a new study…

Sleeping With Dogs homepage

‘Dogs have, through the ages, been considered a man’s best friend. A new study has shown them also to be the enemy of their master’s enemy. The pets are found to be actively hostile to people who mistreat their owners, according to new research. A Japanese study elevates dogs to a select group of species, including humans, that have feelings and are capable of social cooperation’

The Bookbag reviews Not Far from Dreamland by Val Hennessy

dreamland

‘When you review a book you’ve got to do your best to be unbiased: you should look not just at whether or not you enjoyed the book, but your review should reflect whether or not other people might get more (or less) from it than you did – and this is my great problem with Not Far from Dreamland. I’m right in there – in upper middle age with Ronald and friends – facing the same challenges and wondering why bits of my body don’t work like they used to. Or don’t work at all. Val Hennessy has captured the seventh and eighth decades perfectly. I laughed. I cried. Then I started making a list of those of my friends who would have exactly the same reactions… But will it have a more universal appeal? You know – I believe it will. Many of the issues apply to any age’

Not Far from Dreamland by Val Hennessy receives ‘laugh-out-loud’ review on Amazon

‘I was given this book for Fathers’ Day, possibly because I’m of a similar age to the main character, Ronald Tonks. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Laugh out loud!’
