It’s not every day a book is launched in a caravan camp on the Kent coast but that is what happened last Friday at the launch of Val Hennessy’s Not Far from Dreamland. The party bopped till lights out at 10.30 and this very funny novel was well and truly launched. The photographs were very kindly taken by Lee Carter which is probably why they are of such a high standard! Get your copy of Not Far from Dreamland today!
‘The excellence of this novel is its canny synthesis of elements: the essential thriller plot (at times reminiscent of the most powerful writing of Graham Greene; no mean feat in itself) and the careful accretion of character detail in which the principals force us to decide that our initial impressions of them may not be the ones we’re finally left with. The author is an expert on Bollywood and has written a book on the actor Amitabh Bachchan, but the strength of Hotel Arcadia will have readers eager for her to dip her toe into novelistic waters again’

‘I applaud his grandiose spirit and pray that his serious illness today will miraculously disappear, as if the gods have willed it. His latest book, The White Umbrella, speaks volumes of his indisputable talent – especially where the written word is concerned’

‘Tonks’s 2012 journal, which takes in the London Olympics and a hilarious account of the washed-out Diamond Jubilee celebrations, is an inspiration to anyone contemplating with horror the prospect of advancing old age. As recorded here by veteran journalist Hennessy, it is a more than welcome addition to the tradition of comic fictional diaries, including those of Adrian Mole and Bridget Jones. A real riot — and not just for the Freedom Pass generation’

Victor Montagu, the father of Robert Montagu, avoided prosecution for child abuse in 1972. The Guardian, Mail Online and Dorset Echo have covered this new discovery, according to files released by the National Archives.
Robert Montagu has said that he knows ten people who were abused by his father as children but he believed there may be up to twenty.
‘It doesn’t surprise me altogether but I didn’t realise that it went on so late into his life. I had no idea he was ever visited by the police at home or charged. My father was a loner, I don’t think he was part of any Westminster paedophile ring, but he was right there at the time. He had a house in Great College Street, near the House of Commons, and overlooking the gardens of Westminster School, he was right in the middle of it all’

‘With lovely, spindly illustrations by Sally Ann Lasson, the plot has charm and grace…young readers will be both moved by the donkey’s plight, and amused and touched by her eventual fate; while the connection between man and animal resonates powerfully’

‘Singh has done her research really well. There is authenticity in the hotel layout, the near identical rooms and corridors, the acres of marble in common areas. She’s studied (war) photographers and their kit too, there’s a preciseness about Sam’s work and equipment that has just the right level of detail. As to whether Abhi, Sam or any of the others get out alive, of course I can’t say, but this gripping novel will stay with me for these two wonderfully written characters. I heartily recommend it’

‘For women, Venus is a reassuring entity, recognition that they are not simply objects of desire. Her mythology gives her the identity of a mother, daughter and someone whose intelligence and cunning is not to be underestimated. For men, her nude body is undoubtedly titillating and erotic and yet Venus is above objectification. For while she is nude, she is not naked’
