We were delighted to launch Simpson and I: Between Two Worlds by Oggy Boytchev last night at the Osborne Studio Gallery. It was a fantastic evening and Oggy Boytchev read the following note from John Simpson:
‘I enjoyed Oggy’s book very much indeed, and although not all of his memories match mine exactly I’m willing to accept his may be right and mine wrong. We had a really enjoyable time working together and did some remarkable stories. I think he raises some interesting questions about the way news is reported — and he’s clearly not enthusiastic about the way the BBC is managed! For me, his book is a delightful account of our co-operation on the road, and I hope it’s a real success.’

‘With his thoughts turned towards mortality, he has considered what will happen to his body after death. ‘I wish I could leave it to Pedigree Chum,’ he said. ‘I really don’t see why dog lovers shouldn’t end up as dogs’ dinners.’

No, because I had to play the violin. The violin is relentless, and all the adulation in the world won’t enable you to play in tune unless you play in tune. When you measure yourself not by trivial adulation but by the work you have to do, then your measure is quite different. You can’t be spoilt. Besides, I have a marvellous wife, and she is so wonderfully loving and loyal and, at the same time, very critical. That’s the most wonderful kind of marriage. Marriages where the two flatter each other and reinforce each other are very dangerous in a way, especially if they have no children. People must have other people to criticize them.

‘Today’s Oldies should reach out to the young. We need a new movement that creates ways where the young and old work together. There are huge opportunities for mentoring and other activities to build a generational partnership. Yes, the pressures on the NHS will grow, but we can manage them if the political will is there. Yes, an older population will require all sorts of adaptations, but we can manage that too. We need a positive approach to the inevitabilities that we face. ‘Generational warfare’ should be snuffed out at birth.’

‘In reading Anne’s list of rights, it was as if I had just been told I had been a prisoner all of my life, and I had suddenly realised why I felt so trapped. Finally I was liberated because I now knew where my anger had come from, but – most liberating of all – I could ensure these rights were no longer violated by using assertiveness.’
