‘The White Lake has moved a long way fromToujours Provence and become the story of a personal and political struggle, a kind of alternative history of the Polish transformation. It might even be the perfect book for anyone feeling the need to catch up on what exactly happened after 1989. There is just enough background history for outsiders to understand the motivations of the characters, but not so much as to become incomprehensible.’
The Spectator reviews The White Lake by John Borrell. The title is available now!
‘Ernaux should be applauded, because the last fifteen pages, which document her mother’s slide into Alzheimer’s, are a sad and poignant account of a terrible disease. And Ernaux should take credit for that, for her book allows her mother’s life to transcend its alarming end. In fact, it really does help bring her back into the world’

‘It’s clear that Darlow was deeply affected by his contact with Tamara, never forgetting her; and by putting together this book, he’s ensured that other people can share in her life and experiences so that she, and the many other ordinary Russian people who lived through such extraordinary times, will not be forgotten. It was a delight and a privilege to spend time hearing Tamara’s inspiring and touching story, together with the tales she had to tell of a life that began when she was born in Siberia!’
